Autumn Acts of Kindness

Giving back to the community is a year-round commitment for Delmarva Power employees. During the holiday season, we know the need for assistance can be even greater and the Autumn Acts of Kindness initiative helps make sure we are giving back when our communities need it most. This month-long focus on being thankful and helping others resulted in 10 volunteer events throughout November. Here are a few highlights:

Halo (Hope and Life Outreach) – On Nov. 30, volunteers from our Salisbury office participated in the organization’s Halo Hope for the Homeless event, where they prepared and served hot meals to those less fortunate. Many of our volunteers work in our Salisbury, Md. call center have a long-standing tradition of serving meals to those less fortunate.

Operation Gratitude – Newark, Del. area volunteers gathered on Nov. 25 to help Operation Gratitude sort and pack donations collected for troops serving oversees. Operation Gratitude sends more than 250,000 care packages annually. Volunteers also took the time to write thank you letters to our heroes for their service. For Delmarva Power Legal Administrative Assistant Nancy VanGorder, Operation Gratitude is personal.

“My son, Lance Corporal Thomas VanGorder, is a Marine and this Christmas he will be deployed,” said VanGorder. “Many troops do not receive care packages or letters from home and these gifts can make all the difference for those protecting our country, especially during the holidays.”

Thanksgiving Dinner – Employees supported various Thanksgiving dinners for many families through local organizations. Our employees’ efforts included sorting and packing food baskets for more than 900 families through the Sunday Breakfast Mission. Employees also collected 220 pounds of food for the Food Bank of Delaware, along with our Natural Gas employees who collected 225 turkeys for families to enjoy on Thanksgiving Day. Since beginning the turkey collection in November 2000, we have provided more than 4,000 turkeys to local families.

As we move into December, our employees are continuing with the holiday spirit of giving. To learn more about our ongoing community initiatives, visit our Powering Communities webpage.
