As the days become shorter and evenings grow colder, increased energy use is almost certain. At the same time, the current health pandemic continues to keep more working adults at home and school-aged children learning virtually, further contributing to potentially higher energy bills. The good news is there is tens of millions of dollars in state and federal energy assistance funding available to help you pay your energy bill. Here’s what you need to know.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which began accepting applications for the current program year on October 1, 2020, provides up to $1,000 in grant support for your energy bills. However, you must act now to secure funding as LIHEAP is a first come, first served program and is only available until the money runs out.

You can apply for assistance by downloading an application though the Department of Community Affairs website, by contacting your local LIHEAP Agency, or by calling 800-510-3102. You also can access the Department of Community Affairs self-screening toolto help determine what energy assistance benefits you may qualify for.

You may also be able to receive financial assistance through Helping Hands, a program, funded by Atlantic City Electric, providing $1 million annually to help struggling customers meet their energy needs. These funds are dispersed to limited-income residents through the Affordable Housing Alliance and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Camden.
