Major Salem County Project to Result in More Reliable Service for Customers

Providing safe and reliable energy service doesn’t just happen. You have to work at it every day. As part of this effort, Atlantic City Electric is working on a $25-million project that will modernize the local energy grid and enhance electric service for more than 10,000 customers in Salem County and the surrounding area.

This reliability enhancement project, which is expected to be completed in June 2019, includes upgrades to more than 10 miles of existing electric transmission line in Salem City, Alloway, Mannington, Pilesgrove, and other parts of Salem County.

Crews are installing specialized equipment that can automatically restore service more quickly or isolate damage, new steel utility poles capable of withstanding winds up to 120 miles per hour, new switches and other devices, and reinforced aerial transmission line cable.

Projects like this are making a real difference for our customers, who continue to experience improvements in the reliability of their energy service. During the past five years, we have spent hundreds of millions of dollars in southern New Jersey, including more than $300 million just last year, enhancing the local energy grid. During the last five years, customers have seen a 22 percent reduction in the frequency of power outages and faster restoration times than ever before. When outages did occur, customers were restored 17 percent faster, on average.

The continued improvement in the frequency and duration of outages is a direct result of using innovative and more modern technologies to improve system reliability, providing our customers with the safe and reliable energy service they have come to expect from Atlantic City Electric.
