Teaming Up to Enhance Energy Efficiency

Last month, our Energy Savings for Business Program team was proud to attend a ribbon-cutting event at Maryland’s Cecil College to celebrate the opening of their new indoor athletic facility. The school is the first participant in our Energy Efficient Communities Program, which has helped the EmPower Maryland program take another step closer to meeting its goal of reducing Maryland’s annual electric sales by two percent.

Established in 2018, the EmPower Maryland program offers financial incentives, technical expertise, and educational opportunities to municipalities and community organizations interested in making energy efficiency upgrades. As a program participant, Cecil College received $2,800 in incentives to offset the cost of installing high-efficiency light-emitting diode (LED) interior fixtures, which Cecil’s baseball team relies on to practice indoors.

Until now, the Cecil baseball team regularly canceled practice due to inclement weather and a lack of an indoor facility. About two years ago, a group of dedicated community members worked to deliver a new indoor practice facility that was fully funded by a close-knit local network. The recent ribbon-cutting event was attended by more than 50 guests, including school president Dr. Mary Way Bolt, executive school leadership and staff, members from the college’s board of trustees, alumni donors, along with Cecil College student-athletes and coaches. The new space was christened the “Charlie O’Brien Practice Facility” named for the college’s beloved coach who has dedicated more than 25 years to the Cecil College baseball team.

Cecil College leadership emphasized the importance of valuable financial incentives like the ones offered through the EmPower Maryland program. The college recognized Delmarva Power as an “Outstanding Donor” for our part in helping improve the Cecil College student athlete experience.

We are proud to continue working with Cecil College on future projects, including improving stadium lights on their athletic field, and providing a brighter future for the athletes who call Cecil home.
