Pepco’s Energy Efficient Program Helps Geico Save Big

By Elizabeth Hitchman, Senior Energy Efficiency Program Manager from Pepco

On Wednesday, August 1, 2018, the Pepco Energy Savings for Business Program and the Large Customer Services team presented GEICO Insurance Company a check in the amount of $274,580 for performing energy efficient lighting upgrades to their facility. GEICO replaced more than 4,400 existing fluorescent lighting fixtures to new LED fixtures resulting in an annual savings of 1,071,047 kWhs. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) this is equivalent to removing greenhouse gas emissions from driving 1,953,655 miles.  By upgrading the building’s lights, GEICO has greater annual energy and cost savings resulting in better lighting. These upgrades provide a reduction in the risk of injury and improving occupational safety for their employees.

These lighting building upgrades, funded through the EmPOWER Maryland initiative, help Pepco, Delmarva Power and Light, and Atlantic City Electric achieve their annual goal of reducing 2% of Maryland’s annual electric sales. From 2008 to 2015, the EmPOWER Maryland initiative resulted in six participating Maryland utilities achieving a total lifetime energy savings of over 51 million megawatt hours, which is equivalent to the electricity used by 850,000 residential customers over five years.

We congratulate Geico for their efforts and their continued partnership with Pepco!
